I've had an idea for a new story, "The City that Learned to Breathe" #threadmaker
The story is about a group of people who together transform a late stage capitalist authoritarian state into a solarpunk utopia. The story must show the transformation of the philosophical, political, cultural, societal, and technological aspects of the world to make the solarpunk world come into being.
I hate utopian fiction even more than I hate dystopian ones. While I don't believe a utopia is possible, it is important to have something to aspire to, especially now. I think I need something to aspire to as much as anyone who might read this story someday. I like the idea of solarpunk, but I am troubled by the lack of philosophy behind it. Well, maybe it isn't a lack of philosophy, but too many competing for it.
There is no way I am smart enough to devise such a philosophy, but I can at least propose my own. Who knows, maybe this will help me figure out what to think about these things myself. The only thing I know for sure are:
1. The philosophy will be rooted in anarchism: no unjust hierarchies, mutual aid, and consensus decision making.
2. The story must reject violent overthrow of the state since such violence leads to the rise of tyrants since the tactics and people required for such a revolt are not there kind of people who are worthy of positions of trust.
3. There cannot be a "great man" or singular hero that saves the day. That is not how history works. The story will follow a group of strangers who. each plays a part in the revolution.
I hope this story can be a rich and rewarding to write as I need it to be. We cannot fight for a future we cannot imagine, and I need to imagine something good.
